Outbreak of the Irish Civil War over the terms of the Anglo-Irish Treaty that concluded the War of Irish Independence and established the Irish Free State as a Dominion within the British Empire.

Few of Hitchcock’s films touch on political questions in a significant way. His adaptation of Sean O’Casey’s Juno and the Paycock, set in a Dublin tenement during the early months of the Irish Civil War, in September–November 1922, is a rare exception.
